    Staining wood surfaces, optionally followed by a sealing varnish, is an attractive and low maintenance method of finishing a wood surface. Wood expands and contracts naturally with the temperatures, and stain handles this easily. Paint, on the other hand, does not handle such expansions and contractions as well, and may crack, peel or flake after several years.

    Unlike paint, stain does not require a primer coat, saving money on materials as well as labor. Often only requiring a single coat, two coats maximum, stain can often be applied and completed in a single day. Stain naturally fades with age, and is much easier to maintain than paint, leaving a natural organic appearance to your wood surface.

    Stain comes in two varieties: water based and oil based. Water based stains come in two categories: gloss and satin. A gloss finish leaves the surface with a clear reflective shine, while a satin finish gives the surface more of a matted appearance. For this reason, a satin finish is often followed by a gloss to prevent the surface from appearing hazy, or cloudy.

    An oil based stain is preferred when the surface is intended to have more depth and a richer color. Oil based stains penetrate into the surface deeper than water based stains, accentuating the wood grains with more visible presence. Plus, as the surface absorbs the oil based stain, moisture is held in the wood, extending the life of the finished wood from drying and cracking over time.

With a sanded wood surface, you get around seven years of pleasing appearance before aging sets in. With a scraped surface, 35 to 40 years is known, with the only maintenance being a periodic buffing and rewaxing. Although such special finishings can be significantly more expensive than a milled hardwood surface, compared to the life of the surface, you can break even. All the while with a significantly higher quality and refined appearance.
